Greek authorities have intensified security operations in the Ionian Sea after security agencies intercepted and neutralized an unmanned marine drone near the island of Lefkada.
The incident, described by officials as a serious security development, has triggered military investigations and diplomatic discussions at the European level, with Greece emphasizing its determination to safeguard Mediterranean stability and national sovereignty.
Greek Security Agencies Launch Investigation
Speaking from Brussels during the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting, Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis confirmed that Greek authorities are conducting a detailed investigation into the drone’s origin and technical capabilities.
According to government sources, specialized military and security units quickly moved to secure and disable the unmanned vessel after it was detected in the Ionian Sea.
Greek officials stressed that the country remains fully prepared to respond to any threat affecting maritime security, navigation routes, or regional stability.
“The Mediterranean Will Not Become a Theatre of War”
During his statements, Gerapetritis delivered a firm message regarding rising tensions in the wider Mediterranean region.

“The Mediterranean will not become a theatre of military operations,” he stated, reaffirming Greece’s position in favor of peace, stability, and international cooperation.
Athens also warned that incidents involving unmanned maritime systems could create significant risks for:
- International shipping routes
- Civilian maritime activity
- Coastal environmental safety
- Regional peace and security

Increased Attention on Mediterranean Security
The discovery of the unmanned sea drone has drawn political and media attention both in Greece and internationally.
The Ionian Sea is strategically important for Greece due to its maritime traffic, tourism routes, and proximity to major Mediterranean shipping corridors.
Greek authorities said they are cooperating closely with European partners and allied countries while awaiting the final findings of the military investigation.

What the BBC Reports About the Mystery Sea Drone
According to BBC News, the unmanned naval drone was first discovered by local fishermen inside a cave near Lefkada in the Ionian Sea. After the discovery, the Greek coast guard towed the vessel to the port of Vasiliki, where it is now being examined by Greek military experts.
The BBC reports that Greek media sources claimed the drone may have contained explosives and that its engine was still operating when it was found. Experts are investigating whether the vessel suffered a technical malfunction or lost communication with its control centre before drifting into Greek waters.
The report also highlights speculation that the drone could be linked to the ongoing Russia–Ukraine war. Greek newspaper Ta Nea suggested the vessel resembles the Ukrainian MAGURA V5 naval drone, although this has not been independently verified.
BBC coverage explains that Ukrainian sea drones have transformed modern naval warfare in recent years, particularly in attacks against Russian warships and oil tankers. The article also references previous incidents involving unmanned Ukrainian naval drones in both the Black Sea and the Mediterranean.
Greek and Ukrainian authorities had not officially commented to the BBC at the time of publication, while investigations into the drone’s origin and mission continue.
Wider Diplomatic Discussions in Brussels
In addition to the drone incident, EU foreign ministers also discussed ongoing geopolitical developments involving:
- Gaza
- Ukraine
- The Western Balkans
Greece highlighted its diplomatic efforts aimed at strengthening regional cooperation and maintaining stability throughout Southeast Europe and the Mediterranean.
